01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Risuya’s squirrel-shaped cakes, called risuyaki, are baked treats with a choice of sweet azuki bean paste, mame tomato or seasonal fillings. Diners describe the dough as pleasantly chewy and not too sweet. The azuki filling is noted for its gentle sweetness and the texture of the beans, while the soybeans in the mame tomato add a distinctive bean-like flavour. Seasonal options such as caramel apple custard and pumpkin also appear, making it fun to try a few different kinds.
Shaved ice is served in summer. One diner who chose the peach syrup enjoyed its refreshing sweetness and generous pieces of fruit. The menu has also featured fresh melon, made with syrup from seasonal green-fleshed melon, and mango, whose syrup highlights the rich sweetness and balanced acidity of Peruvian apple mango. For a different flavour, options include kuromitsu kinako with azuki bean paste, brown sugar syrup and Hokkaido Tokachi kinako, as well as sake-lees amazake, described as having the savoury depth of pure rice sake.
The focus seems to shift between risuyaki and shaved ice depending on the season, so it is worth checking whether your preferred item is available before visiting on a Saturday. The shop is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 18:00 and offers takeaway. Payment is cash only.
